The King reveals he is ill and has come to the island to make peace with his ancestors. After entering a deep coma, the shaman enters the brother's Dreamtime to try and save Christina. The other children dive into the dangerous Dreamtime as well. Parsons renews his attack on the treehouse.
David Robinson, his wife Elizabeth, and their children Ernst, Joanna and Christina set out on a voyage to China, to build a new life. On the ship they encounter Parsons, an old sailor who believes they have treasure hidden in their cabin. A storm places all on the ship in great danger.
After surviving the storm, the family along with Billy, a cabin boy, reach the deck of the ship only to discover they have been stranded on a reef, with everyone else gone... They make a raft and reach nearby land, a beautiful, but deserted island. But they soon discover they aren't alone.
David, Ernst and Billy find their first adventure. Emily Chen is found hiding on the island and joins the group. They settle into life on the island and try to find a site for their new home. The group gain new skills for living on the island, but Elizabeth isn't excited at the prospect.
One month after the shipwreck, the family are struggling living off the land but have been hard at work growing crops, and keeping animals. Prompted by the island's volcano however, they plan an escape. Parsons and Ben have set up base on a nearby island - with Parsons bent on revenge.
With the arrival of a native tribe, The King threatens the family for inhabiting a sacred island. Emily wanders into the forest and is captured by Parsons and Ben, who are caught by the King's brother. Parsons makes a deal to catch the King - and in return, take over the treehouse.

The family still fight the forces of Nature (and each other) but are looking forward to their first harvest on the Fourth of July. Unknown to anyone, trouble is heading their way. It's 'The Viper', a pirate ship captained by the infamous rascal Samuel Scaggs and his partner, Bonnie Mary.
Ernst finds himself prisoner on The Viper. Parsons informs Scaggs all about the Robinson family, who are surprised at night and overrun by the pirates. Parsons convinces Scaggs to put David on trial, with himself as judge, jury and hangman, intrigued about being on the side of 'justice'.
Ernst escapes the pirate ship and almost rescues the family but is quickly overcome by the pirates. Scaggs finds David guilty and sentences him to hang. Elizabeth attempts to convince Scaggs to let David go. But others implement contingent plans for the family and their friends to survive.
The family continue their life on the island and decide to build a fort as a lookout - and to defend themselves in the event of any more attacks. While searching for driftwood, Ernst sees a girl arrive alone in a canoe. While trying to befriend her, a war canoe appears on the horizon.
