Blessed Are the Poor in Spirit
What does it mean to be poor in spirit? In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus taught about eight people who seem like they are unfortunate, but they are actually blessed. These eight blessings are called the Beatitudes, and the first one says, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Being poor in spirit means that we recognize our need for God. One translation says, “Blessed are the spiritually needy.” When we quit trying to look like we don’t need any help from anyone and accept the fact that we really need God, the whole world opens up to us.
