As Christmas Eve approaches, Madeline is the only one in the convent who is spared from a miserable cold. The girls' spirits drop when they realize they are too sick to travel home for the holidays.
The Spanish Ambassador and his family move into the house next to the convent. The son, Pepito, proves to be what Madeline calls "a bad hat"; an ill-mannered, mischievous braggart.
Madeline falls into the Seine and is rescued by a courageous dog. The girls take home the collarless mutt and name her Genevieve.
Miss Clavel puts the girls to bed after a wonderful day at the fair and discovers that Madeline are her friend Pepito were left behind!
The Spanish Ambassador and his family have moved to London. Miss Clavel and the girls are invited to London for Pepito's birthday party and they buy a retired horse from the Royal Stables as a gift.

Madeline gets appendicitis and must go to the hospital to have her appendix removed.
